A PNR is the booking reference associated with an airline reservation. You can usually check it online through the airline’s official Manage Booking, Manage Trip, My Trips or similar booking-retrieval page.

This guide explains exactly how to find your PNR, where to enter it, what information should appear when the reservation is retrieved, what different booking statuses mean, and what to do if your PNR cannot be found.

How Do You Check a Flight PNR Status Online?

The simplest method is to go to the official website of the airline operating your flight, open its booking-management section, and enter the booking reference or PNR together with the passenger information requested by the airline.

For example, Emirates’ official Manage Your Booking page asks for a booking reference and last name, while Etihad allows passengers to retrieve a trip using a trip reference or ticket number and last name. Qatar Airways also provides a booking-retrieval function using a booking reference/PNR or e-ticket number together with the passenger’s last name.

The exact fields and terminology vary between airlines, so do not assume that every airline uses an identical PNR-checking page.

What Is a PNR?

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It refers to a record associated with a passenger booking and can contain information about the reservation, itinerary and associated travel details.

IATA explains that PNRs are collected by airlines for their business purposes and can contain information about bookings such as a passenger name, itinerary and ticket indicator.

In everyday airline use, you will often see the terms PNR, booking reference, reservation code, record locator or confirmation code. They can refer to the reference used to retrieve a particular booking, although terminology and formats vary between airlines and booking systems.

PNR vs Booking Reference vs Ticket Number

These terms are often confused, but they are not necessarily the same thing.

Term What it generally refers to Used to retrieve a booking?
PNR Passenger Name Record associated with a booking. Often, depending on the airline or booking system.
Booking reference A reference/record locator used to identify a reservation. Yes, commonly.
Confirmation code Another term some airlines use for the booking reference. Usually, where supported.
E-ticket number The number associated with an issued electronic ticket. Some airlines allow booking retrieval using it.
Flight number Identifies a scheduled flight, such as an airline code plus flight number. No. It identifies the flight, not your individual reservation.

For example, Qatar Airways currently describes its booking reference as also being referred to as a PNR and separately identifies the e-ticket number as a 13-digit number.

Step-by-Step: How to Check Your Flight PNR Online

Find your booking reference

Look at your airline confirmation email, reservation document, e-ticket receipt or booking confirmation. Look for labels such as PNR, Booking Reference, Reservation Code, Confirmation Number or Record Locator.

Identify the airline you need to check

If your reservation was made directly with an airline, start with that airline’s official website. If you booked through a travel agency or another booking platform, the reference you received may not be the only reference associated with the reservation.

Open the airline’s booking-management page

Look for a section called Manage Booking, Manage My Trip, My Trips, Retrieve Booking or similar.

Enter the requested information

Depending on the airline, you may need the booking reference and surname, or a ticket number and surname. Enter the information exactly as requested.

Retrieve the reservation

Select the airline’s search, retrieve, continue or similar button. If the details match the airline’s records, your booking information should be displayed.

Check the displayed information

Compare the passenger name, flights, dates, airports and booking information with your original reservation.

What Information Should You See After Checking a PNR?

The exact information displayed depends on the airline, booking system and type of reservation. A retrieved booking may show some or all of the following:

  • Passenger name
  • Booking reference or record locator
  • Flight number
  • Departure airport
  • Arrival airport
  • Travel date
  • Departure and arrival times
  • Operating or marketing airline information
  • Booking or reservation status
  • Ticket information, where a ticket has been issued
Important: Seeing a booking online does not necessarily mean that a ticket has been issued. A reservation can exist before ticketing, depending on the booking conditions and airline.

Does a PNR Mean the Flight Ticket Is Confirmed?

Not necessarily.

A PNR identifies or provides access to a booking record, but a booking reference alone does not prove that an electronic ticket has been issued.

This distinction is particularly important when you are checking a reservation for visa documentation.

What you see What it can indicate
Booking retrieved successfully The airline or booking system can locate the reservation using the information provided.
Flight details displayed The reservation contains itinerary information for the displayed flight segment or segments.
Ticket number displayed An electronic ticket number may have been issued for the booking.
Reservation without ticket number The booking may not have been ticketed, depending on the booking type and airline.
Cancelled / expired The reservation is no longer active in the form previously displayed.

Common Flight Booking Statuses Explained

Confirmed The airline may use this to indicate that the relevant booking segment is confirmed.
Reserved The reservation exists, but the exact meaning depends on the airline and booking conditions.
On Hold The booking may be held temporarily subject to a payment, ticketing deadline or other condition.
Ticketed An electronic ticket has been issued for the relevant passenger or itinerary.
Cancelled The reservation or relevant flight segment has been cancelled.
Expired The booking or held reservation has passed its applicable deadline.

Airlines do not all use exactly the same terminology. Always interpret a status in the context of the airline displaying it.

How to Check a PNR on Major Airlines

Major airlines generally provide an online booking-management facility, but the name and information required can differ.

Emirates Use Manage Your Booking. Emirates asks for the booking reference and last name. Emirates Manage Booking
Qatar Airways Use Manage Booking. Qatar Airways provides retrieval using a booking reference/PNR or e-ticket number and last name. Qatar Airways Manage Booking
Etihad Airways Use Manage Your Booking. Etihad provides trip retrieval using a trip reference or ticket number and last name. Etihad Manage Trip
Turkish Airlines Turkish Airlines provides booking management through its official Book & Manage area. Turkish Airlines

Always use the airline’s official website when checking sensitive booking information. Search results can contain third-party websites that are not affiliated with the airline.

How to Find Your PNR Number

Your PNR or booking reference is normally shown somewhere in the booking confirmation. Check the following documents or messages:

  • Airline booking confirmation email
  • Travel agency confirmation
  • Online travel agency booking confirmation
  • E-ticket receipt
  • Airline mobile app
  • Manage Booking section of the airline website

Look for labels such as PNR, Booking Reference, Reservation Code, Confirmation Number or Record Locator.

Why Is My PNR Not Found?

A booking-reference search can fail for several reasons. A failed lookup does not automatically mean that a booking never existed.

Check the reference carefully

Confirm that you copied the booking reference correctly. Some letters and numbers can look similar.

Check the passenger name

If the airline asks for a surname, enter the surname in the format expected by the airline’s booking system.

Use the correct airline

A booking made through a travel agency may contain an agency reference and a separate airline booking reference.

Check whether the reservation was recently created

Newly created bookings may take some time to become retrievable in another system, depending on how the reservation was made.

Check whether the booking has expired or been cancelled

Temporary reservations and held bookings can have time limits.

Contact the booking provider

If the airline cannot retrieve the reservation, contact the airline, travel agency or booking provider that created it.

PNR Not Found vs PNR Cancelled: What’s the Difference?

These are different situations.

Message Possible meaning What to do
Booking not found The airline cannot locate a booking using the information entered. Recheck the reference, passenger information and airline.
Cancelled The booking or segment has been cancelled. Contact the booking provider and confirm the current itinerary.
Expired A reservation or held booking may have passed its deadline. Contact the booking provider if the journey is still required.
Ticket number required The airline may require an issued ticket number rather than only the reservation reference. Check your e-ticket receipt or contact the booking provider.

Can You Check a PNR Without a Last Name?

Sometimes, but you should not assume that you can.

Many airline booking-retrieval systems ask for two pieces of information, commonly a booking reference and passenger surname. Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad all currently use passenger-name information alongside booking or ticket references in their online retrieval processes.

Some systems may offer other login methods, such as an airline account or e-ticket number.

Can You Check a PNR on a Third-Party Website?

Some travel platforms and booking systems provide booking-retrieval services, but the most straightforward verification method is generally the airline’s own website when the airline accepts the relevant booking reference.

Be careful when entering personal information into unfamiliar PNR-checking websites. A booking reference can be associated with passenger and itinerary information.

Privacy tip: Do not publicly post your PNR, surname, e-ticket number, passport details or complete booking confirmation on social media or public forums. Booking information can contain personal travel data.

Can You Check a Flight PNR on a Mobile Phone?

Yes. Most major airlines provide mobile-friendly booking-management pages, and many also provide official mobile applications.

The process is generally the same:

  • Open the airline’s official website or app.
  • Open Manage Booking, Manage Trip or a similar section.
  • Enter the booking reference or requested ticket information.
  • Enter the passenger information requested.
  • Retrieve the booking.
  • Compare the displayed details with your reservation.

How to Check a PNR for a Visa Application

If you are using a flight reservation as part of visa documentation, checking the booking before your appointment can help you identify obvious discrepancies in the travel information.

Compare the retrieved booking with the documents you intend to submit.

  • Passenger name matches the passport
  • Departure city is correct
  • Arrival city is correct
  • Travel dates match the visa application
  • Flight numbers correspond to the itinerary
  • Return or onward flight is included where applicable
  • Booking reference corresponds to the reservation document
Do not confuse verification with visa approval. Being able to retrieve a reservation online only establishes that the booking information can be retrieved through that system. It does not guarantee that an embassy or immigration authority will approve a visa.

How to Check a HoldnFly Flight Reservation PNR

If you have ordered a flight reservation from HoldnFly and received a booking reference, use the airline associated with the reservation to attempt the online booking lookup.

Open your HoldnFly reservation

Find the reservation document or email you received after placing your order.

Identify the airline

Check which airline and flight are shown on your reservation.

Find the booking reference

Locate the PNR or booking reference shown on the reservation.

Open the airline’s official Manage Booking page

Use the airline’s own website rather than an unofficial PNR-checking website whenever possible.

Enter the requested details

Enter the booking reference and passenger information requested by the airline.

Compare the result

Check that the retrieved passenger and itinerary details correspond with the reservation you received.

If the airline cannot retrieve the reservation, first check that you are using the correct airline reference and passenger information. If the problem remains, contact the provider that issued the reservation.

How Long Does a PNR Stay Active?

There is no universal PNR validity period.

The lifetime of a booking depends on the type of reservation, ticketing conditions, fare rules, airline, travel agency and any payment or ticketing deadline attached to the booking.

A temporary reservation may therefore disappear or change status after a relatively short period, while a fully ticketed booking can remain in the airline’s system for much longer.

Do not assume that every PNR remains searchable for the same number of hours or days.

PNR vs Flight Status: They Are Not the Same

One of the most common misunderstandings is treating a PNR lookup as the same thing as checking the live status of a flight.

What you want to know Where to check
Is my reservation stored in the booking system? Manage Booking / Retrieve Booking
What flights are in my reservation? Manage Booking / Itinerary
Has an electronic ticket been issued? E-ticket details / airline booking record
Is today’s flight delayed? Airline Flight Status page
What terminal is being used? Airline / airport flight information

What If the PNR Shows the Wrong Passenger Name?

Do not ignore a passenger-name discrepancy, especially when the reservation is being used for travel or visa documentation.

Compare the reservation with the passport and contact the airline, travel agency or booking provider if a correction is necessary.

Airlines have different rules for name corrections. Some allow limited corrections while others require the booking provider or airline customer service to handle the change.

Can an Embassy Check a Flight PNR?

A PNR contains booking information that can be accessed by authorised parties within the relevant airline and reservation systems. IATA explains that passenger name record data can include booking and itinerary information and can be used in travel and border-control processes.

Whether and how a particular embassy or consulate verifies a reservation depends on its procedures and the systems available to it.

Therefore, it is better to submit accurate, genuine travel documentation rather than relying on the assumption that a particular verification method will or will not be used.

Common PNR Checking Mistakes

  • Assuming every PNR is exactly six characters
  • Entering a flight number instead of the booking reference
  • Entering an agency booking reference on an airline website
  • Using the wrong airline’s Manage Booking page
  • Entering the passenger name differently from the booking record
  • Confusing an e-ticket number with a booking reference
  • Assuming a retrieved reservation automatically means a ticket has been issued
  • Assuming a PNR lookup is the same as live flight-status information
  • Using unofficial websites without checking their privacy practices
